Difference between Indian Rummy and Gin Rummy

Rummy is one of the most loved games across the sphere. People of all age groups used to play this game. The rummy game offers a variety of variants in different quarters of the world. And in between all such variations, the Indian Rummy Game and Gin Rummy are the most applauded forms of the game.

Initially, the people of the United States started playing Gin Rummy but later on, it spread like a fire in the whole world. Meanwhile, on the other side, Indian Rummy was played via the offline medium in the beginning but today it can be enjoyed vividly on online platforms as well. Both Gin Rummy and Indian Rummy are special in their own way and are a full package of fun and entertainment.  While the basic objectives of the game remain somewhat the same, there are a number of differences between Gin rummy and the Indian Rummy game. Let's know all of them here.

Number of players

Indian Rummy can be played and enjoyed in a group as it allows 2 to 6 players to play the game simultaneously but when it comes to Gin Rummy, it can be played in between only 2 players.

Use of jokers

In Gin Rummy, players play with a deck of 52 cards and are not allowed to make use of any joker in it. Whereas in the Indian Rummy version, the game feels incomplete without making use of joker cards. Here, players play with a deck of cards including 2 jokers in each deck. The availability of Joker cards in the deck allows players to form sequences and sets quickly. and after the formation of a valid hand, they can declare the game. Also, jokers cost nothing so it lessens the points and if you are holding 2 - 3 jokers in hand, then the required arrangements can be formed very swiftly. But in Gin Rummy, players have to wait for the right card to complete the valid hand so it can be more time-consuming.

Versatile aces

In Indian Rummy, ace cards hold the highest value and each ace card carries 10 points. They can be used in combination with both high and low-value cards to form sequences.

While in Gin Rummy, ace cards hold the lowest value and each card carries only 1 point. And can be used in combination with only 2 and 3 value cards.

Compulsory sequence

In Indian Rummy, the player has to form 2 sequences out of which one compulsorily needs to be a pure sequence. While Gin Rummy does not follow such a rule.

No need to knock

The basic motto of the Indian Rummy is to score 0 points. The one who makes the valid hand first is declared as the winner of the game and the fellow players’ score depends on the number of unmatched cards left in hand. While in Gin Rummy, the player has 2 choices. The first is to declare the game without any Deadwood. It is called going Gin and here 25  points are given to the player. The second one is Knocking. Players can opt for knocking if the unmatched cards’ value is less than 10. Here, chances of losing the game are more as your opponents can also go for knocking if left with 1-2 cards. This is not the case with Indian Rummy.

Both Indian Rummy and Gin Rummy are different and unique in their own way. Each is having its own place but still many of the people prefer to play Indian Rummy more as compared to Gin Rummy.
